Our Long Road to Adoption

We had a long road to adoption.

Once we finally decided to adopt we felt we had made such a huge decision. We didn't realize that opening the door to adoption lead to a whole host of other questions. We went to many agency 'intro sessions', some of them twice. Then we found out about Heritage from friends of ours who had just adopted a happy and healthy baby boy through Heritage.

From our first meeting with the Heritage staff, we felt like we had found the people to help us start our family. Heritage really struck such a nice balance between respect, compassion and advocacy for both birth parents AND adoptive parents. This is what we found to be different at Heritage. They listened to us, our concerns, our fears, and we felt taken care of. We were told what to expect, and we had so much help with our 'book'.

Our adoption went much faster than we expected. We were more than ready, but we were really glad that Heritage told us to plan on waiting longer, so we were pleasantly surprised!! When we 'matched' with a birthmother and went to meet her for the first time, to say we were nervous was an understatement. We met the Heritage social worker in the state of our adoption and she was just as much of a pro as Deborah and the Portland office. Again, it was clear she had a deep respect and compassion for the birthmother, but she also cared about us. We had a great first meeting, really hit it off with the birthmother, and things continued to run smoothly from there.

The birth plan, the adoption agreement, the delivery, everything was guided by Heritage's experienced leaders. We had a lot of fears about open adoption, but Heritage worked with us on these concerns, and we have an adoption plan which is open to the degree with which we are all comfortable.

Our son is now 6 months old. He is the light of our lives and we couldn't imagine our family any differently. It is thanks to Heritage that we had a successful adoption. We couldn't imagine being in any better hands. If you're reading this, you are contemplating adoption and have found Heritage's web-page. Make the call, and get started- you won't be disappointed, and we hope that 6 months from now you have a happy and healthy addition to your family.
